Re: ONLY MPEG 4 BOXES WILL WORK?

Only HD receivers will need to be MPEG4. The SD channels will still all work just fine.

Re: ONLY MPEG 4 BOXES WILL WORK?

Glad this is in the Rumor Mill. The primary reason for the Nag3 switch is to stop people from hacking the actual Nag2 cards DN and BEV were using. If the providers do decide to switch over all their satellite signals to MPEG4 compression then they will have to replace all the older subbed receivers. Currently, most of their receivers are MPEG2 at this time as well. So, conceivably by 2012 if they do decide to switch to MPEG4 signals they will have a very expensive upgrade to replace all those receivers. Probably not a feasible upgrade for them, so we will have to wait and see on that. I think it is safe to say anyone reading this now will have no problem upgrading to a MPEG4 receiver in 2012. And keep in mind MPEG4 is not just for HD channels. Any definition TV signal can be compressed to MPEG4, including Standard Def (SD). Some people confuse 8PSK with QPSK with HD only and SD only respectively. The 8PSK (currently used for HD) and QPSK (used mainly for SD) are modulations, and are not to be confused by the MPEG2 and MPEG4 compressions. 8PSK is a higher level modulation compared to the regular QPSK modulation. In QPSK modulation, the bit/symbol rate is 2 while in 8PSK, it is 3. So, in other words, you can transfer more amounts of data using the 8PSK modulation than QPSK modulation. There are also other higher levels of modulation that can be put into place as well. Think of modulation as a data speed, like say a dialup modem vs. a DSL modem. The word modem itself is short for Modulation / Demodulation. Think of MPEG2 and MPEG4 like the difference between say .zip files and .rar files, in which the compressed data packets have to be decompressed by the receiver on the fly.

So SD channels can be sent MPEG4 and 8PSK if they want to transmit them that way.

Hope This Helps !!
