Nimiq 5 Plans Revealed and Finalized

Telesat has recently announced plans to build and launch its 19th satellite, Nimiq 5. It has selected International Launch Services (ILS) for the launch of the Nimiq 5 satellite in 2009. [1] Space Systems/Loral has been selected as the manufacturer for Nimiq 5.

Bell TV will use half of the satellite to provide a wide range of high-definition and specialty television services to its subscribers, and lease the other half of the satellite to Dish Network.

The satellite’s manufacturing plan also includes contracts with the Canadian satellite industry, including multiplexers and switches from Com Dev International Ltd. and antennas from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, Ltd.

Acidstorm, Question: Nimiq 5 will it replace Nimiq 1-3 (91) if so, will the US loose Canadian program all together...

The Below suggest that it will be parked at 72.7w

When they replace a current programming sat, they usually park it in the predecessors place as to avoid subscribers having to get the sat company to realign their dish(Like they did with Nimiq4) .....since this is not the case, i would stick to the above that states it will be used for NEW HD Channels and a lease With Ecostar.

EchoStar entered into a transponder service agreement (the “Transponder Agreement”) with Bell ExpressVu Inc., in its capacity as General Partner of Bell ExpressVu Limited Partnership (“Bell ExpressVu”), which provides, among other things, for the provision by Bell ExpressVu to EchoStar of service on sixteen (16) BSS transponders on the Nimiq 5 satellite at the 72.7° W.L. orbital location. The Nimiq 5 satellite is expected to be launched in the second half of 2009.
