No signal...

I've spent the good part of today fooling around with the satellite. After comparing the skew, direction, and elevation to that of my neighbor's satellite, I have determined that it must be correct on mine. However, I have exactly...0...reception. The receiver was setup for me by another user and i'm assuming it's correct. However, i'm not sure what else to check. Thoughts?

I'm aiming for the 7/8 satellites. It's a Dish Pro 500 dish.

Re: No signal...

BNOLE, go up to FAQ and GUIDE scroll down to (find missing channel on 2700) in that post Woodcreeker had some info on setup's what your settings should be,could be useful to you, i'm not an expert but sounds like something simple if it's a signal prob i would try what's in that post first sometimes a little research helps, alot of us have had the same problem that may have been addressed in an earlier post solved, whatever type of recv you have just go to your recv discussions maybe someone had same prob, if you cant find any help there ask again one of the MOD's can help much more than i...... hope you get your help.also alot of DN's channels are down right now i'm getting some locals and a few others but hey something is better than nothing i say.

Re: No signal...

Thanks, i'll check it out. Also, an fyi, this is the second satellite that "hasn't worked." When the first one didn't work, we assumed it was faulty and brought in a new one. Still, 0% reception. Also, the receiver WAS working when we tested it at a friends house. I can't help but think it's a setting somewhere...but I have no idea where.

Re: No signal...

Do you have two totally seprate LNB's or is it two LNB's in one housing. Because if it both in one housing they have a switch built inside which will not work with a FTA receiver.

Re: No signal...

thats what it sounds like to me, even with DN being down you should still be able to pull in a good signal, could be a setting or even the cable's being crossed, try reversing the disq switch #s on settings i've done it, forgot what sat was disq 1 and disq 2 maybe that will help otherwise your best hope is Woodcreeker see's the post he'll help you for sure has for me numerous times.

Re: No signal...

I'm not sure if I understand the whole separate LNBs thing. There are two LNBs coming out of the satellite and I have those connected with a switch. Also, I did try switching the LNBs at the switch (I was told earlier that may be the problem).

Is it 2 LNBs on a dish 500, or a twin LNB? Does it have any big black DP letters on the LNB?

Re: No signal...

the dish 500 does that have dual lnb's? i'm not sure i have single dishes just had to point at each sat (easier) for me. have a buddy with duals took us forever to get something but after 5hrs later we found them. just started from step one again. first we wrote down what sat went to what switch # so the settings matched with the tv then it was important to findout a working transponder # if your on a dead (tp) you'll turn all day and get nothing i just looked at mine i'm not sure the lnb type and freg for the 500 but u can find that out some were in here once you have that in your settings make on echo 7 your TP number is on [2] good sig there then go on roof turn till u get something if you can then go back check echo 8 put TP on [42] if good sig there too u got it if not then u might be close maybe hitting one but not the other maybe a hair over L/R be sure when u get one u have the other having the TP#s on 2 and 42 is important when you check theres good signal on both. this is what took us 5 hrs to figure out worked for us if all else fails give it a try never know good luck.

There are two separate focus points on the satellite...if that's a way to tell. I was told to set the first satellite and then use the skew to set the second. I'll have to check for big black DP letters on the LNB tomorrow. My dad took care of the satellite so I'll have to take a look for myself in the morning.

Re: No signal...

Right, finding both satellites, you have to skew the back of your dish 500. Most guys try to aim a dish 500 level, and can only get one satellite. So, if you use these numbers, you should get the dish sighted in. Make the mast pole level (front to back, and side to side), Skew the back of the dish to 126. The dish will lean to the left and look funny, but, it will be right. Elevation, set that around 37. Get a compass, and aim the dish southwest. That's pretty much it. I checked all the numbers for NC. just a hair more west than due SW. (Actual azimuth is 230) [180 is due south 270 is due west 225 is due sw]

To see these satellites, the receiver settings have to be right.

Also if you have a DP Twin LNB, you only need to run one cable from the back of the receiver to the LNB. There is a DiSEqC switch built in to that LNB.

If you have a DP LNB
LNB Type: OCS-DP (The DP is for Dish Pro) for both
LNB Freq: 11250 for both
Use TP 2 for 7 (119w)
Use TP 1, [12224] for (110w)

Adjust and tweak in on the Q meter. That is the actual pointing strength.
The S meter is just the connection strength of the coax to the LNB and should remain constant. A little trick on the S meter, wqhen you get closae, you will see the S metergo up slightly, a few numbers.

Tip: Be sure the coax on the back of the receiver is on the port that is labeled 13v 18v. A lot of people put this on the wrong port. Then you will see the S meter go up.

Trick: When you go between 110w and 119w, you will notice the TP change to 12224. So, on 119w you need to hit the right arrow key once to change the TP back to 12239

Hint: When you are adjusting the dish hit the satellite, you will see the satellite name in the center on the bottom, too. That little area tells you which satellite you are hitting. The satellite names have to match.

Good Luck !!

Re: No signal...

I've setup a temporary satellite with 1 LNB to test the receiver. It works. I'm able to get signal level and quality. It found channels as well; however, it's sitting at "wait for picture!" I'll give it a bit longer to work.

So, now I'm wondering if the cable in from the satellite is bad. It's a new house so I'm not sure why it'd be bad...but I suppose it's a possibility.

Woodcreeker - I'm going to try again with the real satellite in a bit. I'll align it to your numbers...although they're pretty close now (skew, etc). I'll double check the settings as well. Thanks and I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: No signal...

See, it's not that difficult.

Do a factory reset first before scanning channels on the new dish setup. A factory reset deletes all channels, AND antenna settings. This is a good thing to start from scratch, again. Once you get your settings, write them dowm and keep them somewhere safe.

IMPORTANT
Be sure you have the same satellite you are setting up appears in the bottom center!! Setup the satellite, then, scan channels. Setup other satellite, scan channels. Directions are on the screen. When you exit, hit save.

Be sure you turn OFF your receiver before hooking up the other dish. Your receiver is powering the LNBs, and you could zap something, like the LNB, or worse, your receiver if you are not careful.

Now, on the scrambled channels part, just get your dish installed first.
I can only handle 1 disaster at a time. LOL.

Re: No signal...

Okay, the portable satellite is working. It's at about 87% sat level and 60% quality. Then, I plugged it into the houses wiring to make sure it was all good. It is; the satellite still works. Then, I plugged the main satellite back in. It's back to 0% level and quality. I've checked the aim of it and it should be good. Thoughts?

And yes, I turned the receiver off before fooling with the wires. I read that previously. Haha.

And, on a side note, not only was the portable satellite receiving signal...but the channels were showing as well. Everything was perfect. Not quite sure where the real satellite could be going wrong. Could something be bad in it? It's new.

hey if everything these guys told you didn't work, then go check the cable wire coming in from the satellite and just loosen it and then tighted it up again. I had the same problem and i did these and it worked.

Re: No signal...

I feel like I learn a ton of new stuff everytime I come here and/or fool around with this thing. Hah.

Anyway, I took the switch out of the equation and ran LNB1 straight into the receiver. I tried setting it EXACTLY like the portable dish (which is working). Still nothing...no signal. I did the same with LNB2...still nothing. I'm wondering if it can be the dish at this point. I feel like I've gotten the settings correct (with all of your help) and since the portable dish works, I think the aiming is correct.

With that said, I'm looking to get a new HD dish anyway. Any recommendations? Thanks for all of the help guys. I'll keep chugging away.

Re: No signal...

Well, you may have thought you tried everything...

0% level tells you you have no connection to the LNB.
Have it on the wrong port on back of the receiver?
The port out to LNBs is labeled "IF Input 13v/18v 500ma Max" I believe, or something like that.
Now you know the easy way to remember this, the receiver is sending out voltage.

You never told me if that dish 500 has a dish pro twin lnb yet.
Or, if they are 2 seperate LNBs. It's been a day now!

Answering questions gets you the information to get you running right away!

And, yes, you will learn tons on everything you do.
Do not fret, you will be an expert in no time doing these setups.

Re: No signal...

based on the entire conversation, i think it might be wrong setting on the diseq switch.

go into your menu and make sure that the diseq setting on each sat selected, corresponds to the input port on the actual diseq/switch.

if your sat 8 lnb is on input 1, make sure that the sat setting on the receiver has the same input port in the diseq setting of that sat.

on some receivers you might be able to use "Auto Detect" to have the receiver look for the sat's input port on your diseq/switch.
