Would it help the server if guests access was controlled

Just a thought, but so you think it might prevent the server being overloaded during the hectic times with everyone trying to get bins, if guests couldnt get access unless they registered. This might benefit the forum twofold, one, we would have more members and two, maybe eventually more much needed donations. Guests are only coming on for free bins and free tech advice, they cant post, so in fact are really contributing nothing at all. They could also prevent many members trying to gain access during busy periods.

I couldn't agree more ladybird.

When the ECM's come at us, this site has been impossible to even get to load. And if the page won't load, then there is no way to log-in. I usually end up waiting a couple of hours until the server traffic has died down enough.

Maybe a separate web log-in page for VIPs. It's getting frustrating to be a pay-and-wait customer.

I was thinking the same, although even the front page requests from guests will still use some bandwidth....Meaning locking the site down will not work that way...
The only way I could see doing it is to redirect to a separate server with a msg saying site locked until after bins are all uploaded etc, with a login option which would take the vip's and admins to the actual server...

That is the only way I can see to make the server bomb proof during these times.

It's odd, the record number on is almost twice the amount of members that are on now.

Yes Bobo my thoughts entirely when members cant get on. I meant 1630 guests on when I last checked and only 962 members and some members have skyped me to say they cant get on.. On many other sites you do not have access if you dont register first. I feel strongly that guests should not have access to bins wihtout registering first. If they dont register whilst they are waiting for something important like bins, then they have no intention of registering, so what good are they to the site if they dont even have the courtesy to register. Nag Nag Nag. LOL

I'm running AMD's 4800 with 4GB & 250GB Sata's with 3 TB Bandwidth x2 with seconday crossovers into box 2. Both boxes have extenernal 100MBit lines for $250 a month and I run a member site with 26,395 Members. Thou it has nothing to do with FTA hehe

i think it performed pretty well last night, better than prior events.

i would run the threaded version of apache 2 and get a good caching raid controller. i imagine most of the hits are reads where the data does not change because there are not actually many posts, just a lot of read refreshes from ppl waiting to see a file release.

I noticed that, most of those signed in werent interested in the forum itself or posting, they were nearly all showing in the files sections. Sad.
